Comeback Medvedev Secures First Trophy in Over Two Years

Nineteen of the Russian's twenty-one victories have been earned on hardcourt

A resurgent Medvedev claimed his initial trophy for over two years with victory over Corentin Moutet in the tournament championship match.

The Russian, a former world number one, has experienced a challenging year, achieving just one win at the Grand Slams and suffering a meltdown at the New York tournament.

His varied form on the ATP Tour - and struggles with his serve in specific - resulted in him falling of the elite rankings and finally separating with long-term trainer Gilles Cervara.

Currently collaborating with his coach and Rohan Goetzke, Medvedev has gradually improved in the last few weeks - culminating in a closely contested three-set victory over challenger Moutet.

This marks Medvedev's maiden title after the 2023 Rome Masters and first on a hard surface after spring of the previous year.

Victory also signifies he has secured 21 titles at twenty-one different events.

"For the first time I'm at a event with my two daughters at once, so to secure a title is particularly special," stated world number 14 the champion.

"This victory is in tribute of my second daughter Victoria, because the initial championship I got when my first daughter her name was delivered was for her."

The tennis star, the former major winner, had failed in his past six title deciders, featuring in that event in the past months.

The player's defensive approach and recurring emotional displays on the tennis court had led commentators to doubt if his skill to compete at the highest level was concluded.

Yet the athlete has altered his approach in the last few weeks, making an effort to come to the net and play assertively, supported by an improved serving game.

Medvedev came back from a disadvantage in the first set against the tricky opponent, winning 4 of the concluding five points to gain the advantage.

Both players traded service breaks in the following set before the Frenchman, attempting for his first professional championship, gained dominance to create a third set.

Moutet rescued four early break points in a tight deciding set before the champion broke to fifteen to secure the win.

Suitably, he clinched the title with a rally at the net area, with his opponent failing to control a volley after over two and a half hours.
